Detention

This is probably the most widely known artwork of mine, even though it originally wasn't even meant as such. Its primary purpose was some testing of an early finalRender Stage-0 build, a fats raytracer and global-illumination plugin for MAX. Iin particular to find out if and how it would be possible to have a multitude of blurry reflecting surfaces in a scene. A hallway seemed most typical to me for that kind of situation, where the light of one window on the far side of the room would seem to propagate along the walls and the floor all the way forth to the camera - just by multiple bounces of direct and indirect light on these surfaces. Even all specular highlights on glossy surfaces are true reflections. In fact there's not a single traditional specular highlight throughout the scene.

So the almost hostile atmosphere and the loneliness in that image, which then led me to the title "Detention" for it, was so to speak just a side effect. I then only gave it a rather cold lighting with a greenish tint and slightly tilted camera to emphasize this newly found "message" and there you go!

Just like "Electricity", "Detention" has been published in a lot of media. Among others also as the cover artwork for the (great) book "Essential CG Lighting Techniques" by Darren Brooker, which of course has been a great honor to me. And you can now order a poster:
