The original
version of "Detention". The idea to that scene came
when I was watching one of those old "Derrick" episodes.
Some locations had this typical interior design of the seventies
and early eighties, so I thought it would be interesting to
create such a linoleum corridor. The blurry reflections on the
walls and the floor were also a great experiment to test-drive
finalRender Stage-0 beta. As you can see, the geometry is kept
very simple. The image mainly lives off of the lighting design,
using pretty much every technique fR had to offer at that time.
The scenery out front is part of the forest HDRI probe, which
can be found on Paul Debevec's website. This HDRI is the source
for the overbright blurry reflections along the walls and the
floor. There is also a directional light with an fRVolume effect,
acting as sunlight, and of course the fR cylinder lights hanging
down the ceiling, which use fRShadowMaps. All textures except
for the images on the wall are procedural. Of course there is
also global-illumination involved, with some heavy sample artifacting
left intentionally, for it contributes to the worn out look
of the upper walls in my opinion.
The title "Detention" was just an attempt to describe
the mood the picture turned out to have. It somewhat reminded
me of my old elementary school, the emptyness of the corridors
at a cold autumn afternoon... or whatever you want to see in
that image. ;-)
